Domain, Hosting and Business Email: A Simple Guide for Nepali Businesses

By Bibek Pandey · · Updated · 2 min read

Before a website exists, you need three building blocks. They are often bundled by agencies, which is convenient but can hide who actually owns what.

Domain name

Your domain is your address, such as yourbusiness.com. Nepali businesses commonly choose between:

Option Good for
.com Reaching customers and partners worldwide
.com.np A clearly Nepali business identity; registration normally asks for business documents
.org.np / .edu.np Registered organisations and institutions

Pick a name that is short, easy to say on a phone call, and easy to spell from the Roman alphabet. Avoid hyphens and numbers.

Hosting

Hosting is the computer that serves your website. Two things matter most for visitors in Nepal:

  • Speed on mobile data. Many visitors browse on phones and on variable connections, so small, optimised pages matter more than heavy animations.
  • Reliability and backups. Ask how often backups run and how you would restore one.

A server located closer to South Asia usually responds faster for local visitors, but a well-built site with a CDN can be fast from anywhere.

Business email

An address like hello@yourbusiness.com looks more trustworthy than a free webmail address, and it stays with the business if staff change. Use a proper mailbox service rather than forwarding, so you can send and receive reliably.

Ownership checklist

  1. The domain is registered in your business name with an email you control.
  2. You hold the hosting and email logins, or you have written access.
  3. You know the renewal dates. Expired domains are the most common avoidable outage.
  4. You have a copy of the website files and a database backup.

If a developer registers everything in their own name, getting it back later can be slow and stressful. Ask for it in your name from the start.
